Chapters
Grand Valley State University reserves the right to recognize fraternities and sororities as member organizations that are able to use Grand Valley State University's name and likeness. In order for a group to maintain good standing, chapters must participate in the annual Greek Standards and Assessment Program, adhere to all Fraternity & Sorority Life, Office of Student Life, and Grand Valley State University policies, and comply with all guidelines within the relationship agreement, signed at the beginning of each academic year.

Councils
The Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and Panhellenic Association (PHA) play a pivotal role within the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Fraternity & Sorority Life Community. Each council serves as the governing bodies of our community, determining policies, procedures, rules, and standards for the organizations that fall under their purview. Leaders from each council work closely with members of the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff, who serve as primary advisors of the councils.
IFC is the governing body for six recognized member fraternities. Members of the IFC Executive Board are elected by their peers to lead recruitment efforts, community programming, provide peer-to-peer accountability, and more. The IFC at GVSU is a member of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), and adheres to their Standards Operating Procedures. Overall, the IFC serves as a resource and support system for fraternities on campus, providing leadership development opportunities, policy guidance, and advocating for the interests of its member organizations.

The Council serves as the governing body of those organizations whose purpose is to promote leadership, community service, social activities, co-sponsor educational and cultural programs, and promote cultural awareness through various involvement in the GVSU and greater Grand Rapids communities.

Currently, four organizations with active members hold charters at GVSU, while other organizations have members that have been initiated by local alumni or graduate chapters. Affiliated members are elected to the NPHC executive board to oversee collaboration, educational programming service projects, and social activities. Some key programs that NPHC at GVSU hosts are the NPHC Icebreaker, the Kirkhof Blackout, and the End-of-Year Cultural Bash.
